Key facts
- Most children settle within two to four weeks of a consistent routine.
- Short, confident goodbyes reduce distress more than long, drawn-out ones.
- Educators can send a photo or message once your child has settled — always ask.
Before the first day
- Book at least two orientation visits so the room, smells and faces are familiar.
- Talk about childcare positively and specifically: 'you'll see Miss Katie and play in the sandpit'.
- Practise the morning routine once or twice at home so the day feels rehearsed.
- Pack a comfort item if your child uses one, and label everything.
Week one: short and predictable
Where possible, start with shorter days. Arrive at the same time, follow the same sequence — bag on hook, wash hands, choose an activity — and then say a clear goodbye and leave. Children read hesitation as a sign the place is unsafe.
Tears at the door are normal and usually stop within minutes. Ask your educator to message you once your child has settled; it is the fastest way to calm your own nerves.
Weeks two and three: the wobble
Many children have a great first week and a harder second week, once they realise this is ongoing. This is a good sign, not a setback. Keep the routine identical, keep goodbyes short, and let educators know about anything happening at home — a new baby, a house move, poor sleep.
Week four and beyond
By the fourth week most children have a preferred educator, a friend or two, and a favourite part of the day. If your child is still distressed for long stretches, ask for a meeting. Changes to the start time, the drop-off parent, or the room routine often make the difference.
Frequently asked questions
How long does it take a child to settle into childcare?+
Most children settle within two to four weeks with a consistent routine. Younger toddlers and children starting during a big life change may take six to eight weeks, which is still within the normal range.
Should I sneak out to avoid tears at drop-off?+
No. Leaving without saying goodbye tends to increase anxiety, because your child stops trusting that you will tell them what is happening. A short, warm, confident goodbye works better.
