Choosing a Childcare Centre in Bayswater: A Local Family Guide

1. The National Quality Rating

Every Australian early learning centre is independently assessed against the National Quality Standard (NQS) by ACECQA. Centres are rated as Working Towards, Meeting, Exceeding or Excellent. A strong rating is a useful signal, but keep in mind that newer services may not yet have been through their first Assessment and Rating visit — many highly regarded centres are currently rated Meeting the National Quality Standard or are awaiting assessment. Ask the centre about their approach to the seven quality areas and how they continually improve.

2. The educational program

Ask how the program is planned. Look for:

• A play-based approach that follows children's interests
• Qualified Early Childhood Teachers in every kinder room
• Outdoor and nature play as part of every day
• Strong relationships with families and the local community

4. Hours, fees and the Child Care Subsidy

For working families in Bayswater and surrounds, early opening and late closing hours matter. Check the daily rate, the Child Care Subsidy (CCS) you're entitled to, and what meals and consumables are included.

Families with a 3 or 4 year old should also ask about Free Kinder — under the Victorian Government program, eligible kindergarten sessions cost nothing.
